How German pet retail opens its videos
We classified the first three seconds of 1,490 distinct films from five German pet brands — Fressnapf, Das Futterhaus, Zooplus, Dehner and Pets Deli — across a full year of launches. The market opens with a problem, speaks plainly, and is shaped far more by one D2C brand than by the four retailers.
What we found
- 0169%
One D2C brand writes the market average
Pets Deli made 1,032 of the 1,490 films we analysed; the four retailers together made 458. Any "German pet market" opening mix is mostly a Pets Deli mix — so we show the brands side by side, not just the total.
- 024 of 5
The open loop is the opening that survives the budget correction
Measured against each brand's own median reach, open loop openings index above par at four of the five brands (105 to 198). It is the one opening that holds up once you take budget out of the picture.
- 03159 vs 11
Pets Deli keeps films; retailers rotate them
Pets Deli has 159 films that ran 60 days or more. Fressnapf, Zooplus, Dehner and Das Futterhaus have 11 between them. The retailers are running a weekly offer cycle; Pets Deli is running a library.
01The study
What we looked at
German pet retail is one of the most video-heavy categories we track, and the one where we hold the deepest opening data. Five brands: the three big retailers — Fressnapf, Das Futterhaus and Dehner — the online pure player Zooplus, and the D2C fresh-food brand Pets Deli.
We took every ad they launched in the last twelve months — 29 September 2025 to 28 September 2026, one window for every number in this study — which is 7,011 ads, 3,189 of them video.
Then we downloaded the videos and classified how each one opens. 2,063 video ads (65%) have been analysed so far. Because the same film is routinely re-run as several ads, we collapse those to 1,490 distinct films and make every creative claim on films, not ad ids. Ad counts are used for volume only.
02Share of voice
5 brands launched 7,011 ads in twelve months
Ads launched per brand, 29 September 2025 to 28 September 2026. All formats.
Fressnapf launched 41% of every ad in the set — but only 23% of its ads are video, which is why it is not the brand that shapes the openings below.
03Format
Pets Deli is a video advertiser; the retailers are not
Across the set, 3,189 of 7,011 ads are video — 45%. The delta column is each brand against that set average, in points.
Pets Deli runs video on 93% of everything it launches — more video ads than the four retailers combined (1,683 vs 1,506). Fressnapf, the biggest advertiser by count, is the least committed to video at 23%.
04The calendar
Flea & tick season, not Black Friday, is the peak
Video ads launched by the whole set inside each pet-retail moment of the window, and which brand led it. Moments are as defined in the Data Room calendar and can overlap (June sits in both Flea & Tick and Summer Sales); Back to School is counted to 28 September.
Every brand plays every moment, and Pets Deli leads all six. Video volume builds through the year rather than spiking at Black Friday: 384 video ads launched in July and again in August, against 289 in November.

We run this exact analysis with your brand in focus — against Fressnapf Deutschland, Pets Deli, Zooplus or whoever you actually compete with. Every video opening classified, every moment you trade on.
05Hook Studio
The first three seconds
Each analysed film is classified on what its opening promises, the form it is shot in, and the tone it speaks in. These three have enough classified volume in this set to report — between 1,451 and 1,461 films each.
Read the shares as "how the market opens" and the reach index as "how far the ads carrying that opening travelled, against this set's base" — remembering the caveat above about who uses what.
06The promise
What the opening promises
- Problem call-out · 36%
- Anticipation / open loop · 20%
- Claim / promise · 14%
- Everything else · 30%
Problem call-out
36%Names a pain point or frustration the viewer recognises.
Anticipation / open loop
20%Starts something the viewer has to keep watching to see resolved.
Claim / promise
14%Asserts a benefit, result or bold statement up front.
Almost the mirror image of fashion: 36% of films open by naming a problem, and a bare brand intro appears in just 3 films. But 499 of the 528 problem call-outs are Pets Deli's. The retailers open on the offer instead — 32 of Das Futterhaus's 68 classified films, 52 of Fressnapf's 226.
07The form
How the opening is shot
- Talking head · 27%
- Establishing scene · 24%
- Product in hand · 16%
- Everything else · 33%
Talking head
27%A person speaks to camera from the first frame.
Establishing scene
24%A place, environment or situation is set up before anything else.
Product in hand
16%A person holds, opens or uses the product.
People, not product: a quarter of films open on a talking head and only 4% on product beauty. Product in hand is the most-used form that indexes above base at 125 — and it holds up inside the brands too.
08The tone
How the opening sounds
- Informative · 40%
- Empathy · 20%
- Humour · 17%
- Everything else · 23%
Informative
40%Neutral, explanatory, matter-of-fact.
Empathy
20%Warm, caring, emotionally recognising the viewer.
Humour
17%Comic, playful or self-aware.
German pet retail talks plainly: 40% informative, and only 3% aspirational. Humour is the stand-out at a set-level index of 181 — though much of that is Fressnapf and Zooplus budget. Within-brand, humour is above par at Fressnapf (113) and Zooplus (172) and a little below at the other three.
09Taking budget out
Which openings travel inside each brand
The same reach index, computed separately inside each brand: an opening's median reach against that brand's own median for classified video ads. 100 = the brand's par. Counts are video ads; cells under 10 ads are withheld (—).
| Opening | Pets Deli | Fressnapf | Das Futterhaus | Dehner | Zooplus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open loop | 127 | 198 | 156 | 105 | 58 |
| Product in hand | 166 | 417 | 116 | 99 | — |
| Talking head | 67 | 211 | 150 | 98 | — |
| Claim / promise | 110 | 38 | 74 | 92 | 116 |
| Problem call-out | 105 | — | 306 | — | — |
| Question / direct address | 59 | 195 | 27 | 88 | — |
| Offer-led | 41 | 76 | 70 | — | 27 |
| Humour (tone) | 85 | 113 | 69 | 95 | 172 |
Two things survive the budget correction. Open loop clears par at four of five brands, and product in hand at three of four with enough data. And one thing flips: offer-led openings index 176 across the set but sit below par inside every brand that uses them — the set-level number was the retailers' budgets, not the opening.
A long-runner, described
The graphic, gross close-up of soft stool paired with a provocative question about premium food creates instant scroll-stopping shock and relatable pet-owner anxiety.
10Craft
Most openings cut at least once
Read from the video file rather than from classification — the number of shots in the first three seconds, and whether anything moves. Google's ABCD "Pace" rule asks for two or more shots in the first five seconds; we apply it to three, which is stricter.
Half the analysed films have been measured so far, and Pets Deli is 466 of the 751. By brand: Pets Deli cuts in 67% of measured openings, Dehner 59% (22 films), Zooplus 43% (35), Fressnapf 40% (164), Das Futterhaus 30% (64) — and 42% of Das Futterhaus openings are static.
11Positioning
Volume, video and reach are three different games
The full set at a glance — ads launched 29 September 2025 to 28 September 2026. Films = distinct analysed video creatives. EU reach is launch-attributed.
| Brand | Ads launched | Video ads | Video share | Videos analysed | Films | EU reach |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fressnapf Deutschland | 2,896 | 657 | 23% | 59% | 232 | 411.8M |
| Pets Deli | 1,816 | 1,683 | 93% | 75% | 1,032 | 37.3M |
| Zooplus | 1,059 | 312 | 29% | 24% | 59 | 224.1M |
| Das Futterhaus | 744 | 302 | 41% | 73% | 69 | 34.8M |
| Dehner | 496 | 235 | 47% | 48% | 98 | 24.8M |
Pets Deli made 1,032 films for 37.3M reach; Zooplus made 59 for 224.1M. Creative output and bought reach are almost unrelated here — and Zooplus is the brand we can say least about, with only a quarter of its video analysed.
12What next
What we would test
For a retailer in this market, the gap is obvious: the offer-led opening is the retail default and it sits below each retailer's own par. The openings that clear par inside the retailers are the ones Pets Deli has industrialised — open loop and product in hand, and at Fressnapf a talking head (211 within-brand). Test a problem-led or open-loop opening with the offer moved to the next three seconds.
For Pets Deli, the opposite: its problem call-out is its own par (105), not a lever. Its above-par openings are product in hand (166) and open loop (127) — both already used, both worth more share. Its direct-address openings (59) are the ones to cut back.
For anyone: almost nobody opens aspirationally (3%) or on product beauty (4%) in this category, and Das Futterhaus shows that a static opening is still common. Two or more shots in the first three seconds is the cheapest fix on the list.

How this was built
Set: Fressnapf Deutschland, Pets Deli, Zooplus, Das Futterhaus, Dehner. Window: 29 September 2025 – 28 September 2026. Source: Meta Ad Library (EU).
Ads were collected from the public Meta Ad Library for the EU, scoped to five advertisers in German pet retail. Every figure uses one window: ads that **launched** between 29 September 2025 and 28 September 2026. Data snapshot: 29 September 2026.
Video creatives were downloaded and their first three seconds classified. 2,063 of 3,189 video ads (65%) are analysed; coverage varies by brand from 24% (Zooplus) to 75% (Pets Deli). Ads that carry the same film are collapsed to one film, giving 1,490 distinct films. Opening shares are film shares.
The reach index is the Data Room's own: median EU reach of the video ads carrying an opening, divided by the median across all classified video ads in the set, × 100. The within-brand table applies the same formula inside each brand. Reach is launch-attributed: an ad's lifetime reach counts in the month it launched.
Three hook dimensions — promise, form and tone — have enough classified volume to report. The perceptual dimensions (subject scale, face, gaze, arousal, valence, text load, curiosity) cover only 136 films, almost all of them Pets Deli, and are withheld rather than presented as a market read.
Craft measures come from the video file (shot count, motion) for 751 films. Longevity is the longest run of any ad carrying a film, measured to the snapshot date for ads still live.
Commercial moments are the Data Room's pet-retail calendar; a moment's count is video ads launched inside it. Cuts backed by fewer than 10 creatives are marked low-n or withheld and never support a headline.
