Premium outerwear does not discount for Black Friday. It launches.

We collected every ad eight premium outerwear brands launched in Italy in November and December 2025. 584 ads, and a category that runs faster through Black Friday without saying so: barely one ad in twenty names the day.

What we found

  1. 01
    1.6×

Outerwear speeds up for Black Friday — but it was already running

The set launched 266 ads in the 23 days from 10 November to 2 December: 11.6 a day, against 7.0 a day across the year. The 23 days before it ran at 11.7 a day. Black Friday sits inside the autumn launch season; it does not create one.

  2. 02
    32 of 584

    Almost nobody says the words

Only 32 ads launched in November and December name Black Friday, and 56 carry any discount or promo wording (estimates from ad copy). Canada Goose, Herno and Moncler ran 288 ads between them without naming Black Friday once.

  3. 03
    0.37× vs 2.96×

    The calendar is a choice

K-Way launched at 0.37× its normal pace during Black Friday and 1.84× through the rest of December. Woolrich did the mirror image: 2.96× in the Black Friday window, 0.48× after it. Same category, same month, opposite bets.

01The study

What we looked at

Black Friday is where most categories go to discount. Premium outerwear has a problem with that: its product is expensive, seasonal, and sold on the promise that it is worth full price. So what does a category like that actually do when every other brand in the feed is shouting percentages?

We took eight premium outerwear brands advertising in Italy — Canada Goose, Herno, Colmar, Moncler, Woolrich, Napapijri, K-Way and Save the Duck — and collected every ad they launched between 1 November and 31 December 2025. That is 584 ads, 137 of them video.

Then we looked at three things: when they launched, what the copy says, and — for the video we could download and classify — how the first three seconds open.

03Timing

Faster through Black Friday — as fast as October

Ads launched per day by the whole set in the Black Friday window (10 November – 2 December, 23 days), against the set's average for September 2025 – August 2026 and the 23 days immediately before.

The lift is real against the year (1.6×) but not against October. For this category the autumn launch season is the event; Black Friday falls inside it.

Per day, Black Friday runs 2.4 video launches, Christmas 2.3 and Spring Launch 2.7 — no single moment stands out in video. Counted across all formats it is different: Black Friday is the busiest stretch of the year at 11.6 ads a day, against 8.2 at both Christmas and Spring Launch. Herno leads video in four of the six moments (tied with K-Way in January).

Colmar, Woolrich and Save the Duck concentrate on Black Friday and step back after it. K-Way and Napapijri do the opposite and push into Christmas gifting. Herno and Moncler run hot through both. None of these is wrong — but only a few look like a decision rather than a habit.

06The copy

Who actually says "Black Friday"

Ads launched 1 November – 31 December 2025 whose copy or link title names Black Friday, and those carrying any discount or promo wording (a percentage off, sconto, saldi, sale, promo, a code, offerta, deals). Both columns are estimates from pattern matching; an ad can be in both.

Across the set, 5.5% of ads name Black Friday and 9.6% use discount or promo wording. Colmar alone carries 19 of the 32 Black Friday ads: eight sign-up and early-access ads from 3 November, then eleven public "up to -30%" ads from 27 November. Herno's four are winter-sale (saldi) ads at the end of December, not Black Friday. Moncler and Canada Goose: 192 ads, no discount language at all.

07Format

Video is a minority format — with two exceptions

137 of 584 ads launched in November and December are video — 23%. The delta column is each brand's video share against that set average.

The first three seconds

Video is thin in this category, so this is the least certain part of the report — and we say so up front. Of the 137 video ads launched in November and December, 95 have been downloaded and classified. Many of them are the same film deployed several times, so we count films, not ads: those 95 ads collapse to 53 distinct films, 52 of them with a classified opening.

Each option below carries a reach index: the median launch-attributed EU reach of films opening that way, against the median for all 52 films (= 100). With this few films, only the promise the opening makes has enough volume in more than one option to chart.

10Positioning

Ads, creatives and reach are three different games

The set at a glance — ads launched 1 November – 31 December 2025. Distinct creatives collapse ads that carry the same film or picture; median days live runs to each ad's stop date, or to 29 September 2026 if it is still running.

584 ads carry 344 distinct creatives — each piece of creative ran 1.7 times on average. Colmar deployed 37 creatives as 85 ads; Herno made 65 and ran each fewer times. Ad count measures media buying as much as production.

11What next

What we would test next year

The lesson from this set is that premium outerwear treats Black Friday as a launch slot, not a sale. The pace goes up; the language does not change. That leaves two open positions.

First, timing. The category is already at full speed in the three weeks before Black Friday, and spends December split between brands that stop and brands that start. A brand that holds its best launch for the week after Black Friday, when the Colmar–Woolrich–Save the Duck group has stepped back, is buying a much quieter feed.

Second, the opening. 87% of this category's films make no promise at all. Claim, problem call-out, direct question and social proof were used zero times by eight brands across November and December. The open loop is the one alternative with any evidence behind it — three films, a very high index, and nowhere near enough volume to call it proven. It is the cheapest test in this report.

How this was built

Set: Canada Goose, Herno, Colmar, Moncler, Woolrich, Napapijri, K-Way, Save the Duck. Window: 1 November 2025 – 31 December 2025. Source: Meta Ad Library (EU).

Ads were collected from the public Meta Ad Library for the EU, scoped to eight advertisers in Italian premium outerwear. The report uses one window throughout: ads **launched** (delivery start) between 1 November and 31 December 2025. Volume, format, copy, positioning and the video-opening analysis all count ads or films launched in that window.

Timing comparisons use two sub-periods inside that window — the Black Friday window, 10 November – 2 December (23 days, 6.3% of a year), and 3 – 31 December — against each brand's own launch rate from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2026 (2,565 ads for the set). The calendar strip compares video ads launched at each retail moment across that same year. The weekly timeline on the cover spans 29 September 2025 – 11 January 2026 for context.

Copy figures are estimates. "Names Black Friday" matches "Black Friday" in any spacing or case in the ad copy or link title; "discount or promo wording" matches percentages off, sconto/sconti, saldi, sale, promo, codice/code, offerta, deals and similar in Italian and English. 16 of the 584 ads carry no copy text and count as neither.

Distinct creatives group ads that carry the same film, the same video file or the same picture (perceptual hash). Video ads not yet downloaded — 42 of 137 — count as their own creative, so creative counts are an upper bound.

The opening analysis counts films, not ads: 95 classified video ads collapse to 53 distinct films (duplicate uploads merged), 52 with a classified opening. The reach index is the median launch-attributed EU reach of films opening a given way — each film's reach summed across its runs in the window — against the median for all classified films (= 100). It is the fairest comparison available between brands of different size, but it does not remove spend effects.

Reach is launch-attributed: an ad's lifetime reach is counted when it launched, so it shows when reach was bought, not when it landed. Cuts backed by fewer than 10 films are marked low-n and are not used to support headline claims.
